Delhi 2011

Day one It was in Delhi that I made a three night stopover on the way back from Nepal in March 2011. Unlike Nepal I had made all my own arrangements for Delhi.

On arrival I had made arranged for a taxi to pick me up at the airport, but when I left the terminal it was nowhere to be seen, however he did turn up after about 30 minutes.
Red fortAll went well, he took my bag to the car, we got going, through the security, and then he ran out of fuel. Right in the middle of a roundabout.
The driver produced a bottle of water, drank it and set off for the nearest petrol station, meanwhile I was sat there being honked at by every passing car.
Eventually he came back, poured in the fuel and we set off to fill up with LPG.
On the way into Delhi the traffic was horrendous and I can tell you I was just a bit concerned at the standard of driving, but we did arrive at my accommodation and I settled in.
I was straight out to see the place and book a city bus tour for the next day.
Delhi for my was a bit of a culture shock, cars, bikes, taxis, and cows all over the india place, crossing the road was a death wish, but it had to be done.
People were generally very helpful but I soon found that to look a bit lost was awkward as everyone just wanted to be my friend for some reason (the beggars were quite cute).
Anyway tour booked I visited the Paharganj area, this is where the backpackers (like me) frequent and it is a maze of streets, full of stalls and litter, but good fun nonetheless.
Something I did find difficult was to find someplace that looked clean in which to have a meal, there were flies everywhere and some of the places looked pretty grotty.

Day two Up early, breakfast and ready to go. I took a motorised bicycle to the bus station, and that was an experience, I thought the taxi yesterday was bad, well this was worse, good though.
The tour visited; Lakshmi Narayan Temple, Qutub Minar, The Lotus Temple, Gandhi Smriti, The Red Fort, Rajghat, and Humayun's Tomb.Humayuns Tomb All these sights were very interesting and the guide was excellent, Red fortalthough I had to pay an entrance premium for being non Indian it was good value at only 308r for the bus which lasted from 9.00am to 6.00pm.

Day three Into the centre of Delhi and took a leisurely look around, sat in Central Park enjoyed the sunshine and watched life go by.
In the afternoon I walked down to the war memorial at India gate, a beautiful place but sorely blighted like the rest of Delhi by litter, there are plenty of bins but no one seems to know what they are for. On the way down there I asked a soldier if this was the correct way and he said if I wanted to know I should give hime 40 rupees. Guess what I did, that's right found the way myself.

Day four Back to the airport today, same taxi but it had LPG this time and took half the time to get there.
Flight was on time and although I had enjoyed my visit to Delhi it was a pity that it was so dirty.
Back in London and spent the night at a hotel near the airport for my early connection to Edinburgh next morning.
